Meatball Foil Packet Meals

These foil packets are a guaranteed hit—especially with kids. Inspired by other easy grill-and-campfire recipes like sausage-and-vegetable packets, French dip packets, and cheeseburger hobo packets, this version focuses on a family-friendly combination: meatballs, tater tots, and veggies. The tater tots are always a crowd-pleaser and make it easy to sneak in some vegetables, so everyone wins.

You can assemble the packets ahead of time and freeze them right in the foil for convenient freezer meals. When ready to cook, simply add cheese after thawing or while warming on the grill.

Foil packets work for breakfast and dessert too—try options like cinnamon monkey bread or campfire apple crisp in foil packets. The benefits are clear: individual portions, simple cooking, great flavor, and almost no cleanup.

The combination of tater tots, meatballs, and cheese is irresistible—simple ingredients, big payoff.

Tater tots are a family favorite and an easy way to ensure everyone finishes their plate—or packet. When paired with meatballs and veggies, they turn into a balanced, kid-approved meal. Add a little seasoned salt and a generous sprinkle of sharp cheddar for the finishing touch.

Grocery List for Meatball Foil Packet Meals

  • Frozen homestyle meatballs
  • Frozen mixed vegetables
  • Tater tots
  • Seasoned salt
  • Sharp cheddar cheese
  • Heavy-duty aluminum foil

How long do you cook foil packets on the grill?

Place the sealed packets directly on the grill and cook for about 30 minutes, or until the meatballs are hot and steaming and the tater tots are golden and crispy.

Can you freeze foil packet meals?

Yes. Portion the meatballs, tater tots, and vegetables onto separate sheets of foil, add the seasoned salt, and seal each packet tightly. Freeze the packets flat. When ready to cook, add cheese after thawing or sprinkle on top before grilling from frozen—just increase cooking time slightly to ensure everything is heated through.

Steps to make Meatball Foil Packet Meals

  1. Preheat the grill or oven to 350°F, or prepare a campfire with a stable grate.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the frozen meatballs, frozen mixed vegetables, frozen tater tots, and seasoned salt. Toss gently to mix.
  3. Cut eight pieces of heavy-duty aluminum foil, about 8″ x 12″ each.
  4. Lightly spray one side of each foil piece with nonstick cooking spray.
  5. Divide the meatball-tater tot-vegetable mixture evenly among the eight foil sheets.
  6. Fold each foil piece up into a packet and seal the edges tightly. If not using heavy-duty foil, double-wrap the packets to prevent leaks.
  7. Place the packets directly on the preheated grill or on a sheet pan in the oven and cook for approximately 30 minutes, or until everything is hot and tater tots are crisp. For campfire cooking, place packets on the grate and monitor closely.
  8. Open carefully (steam will be hot), sprinkle each packet with sharp cheddar cheese, and serve immediately.

If you prefer indoor cooking, these packets can be baked on a sheet pan in the oven. They’re perfect for feeding a crowd and easy to prepare in advance. If you love meatballs, try smoked or BBQ-style meatballs for another tasty twist.
