These Homemade Garlic Butter Breadsticks are incredibly soft, fluffy, and buttery. They’re easy to make and pair perfectly with many meals.

If you love warm, restaurant-style breadsticks, this simple recipe delivers a batch of tender, buttery sticks made right at home. You don’t need special skills—just basic pantry staples and a little patience while the dough rises. The result is soft, pillowy breadsticks with a flavorful garlic butter topping.

These breadsticks are ideal when you want a comforting side without going out. They’re budget-friendly and straightforward: the dough comes together quickly, then you wait for it to double in size. When baked and brushed with garlic butter, they become irresistibly soft and aromatic.

The ingredient list is short: warm water, active dry yeast, sugar, melted butter (or margarine), salt, all-purpose flour, garlic powder and Italian seasoning. With just seven core ingredients you can make 16–18 generous breadsticks that freeze or store well for a day or two.

These breadsticks are delightfully fluffy—light in texture and rich with butter and garlic. They’re great as a side to pasta, soups, salads, or any meal that could use a comforting, savory bread.

Tips for making Homemade Breadsticks:
Make sure your water isn’t too hot
Use water around 110–115°F (warm but not hot). If you don’t have a thermometer, the water should feel comfortable on your wrist—not scalding. Water that’s too hot can kill the yeast and prevent it from foaming.
Use fresh yeast
Check your yeast before starting. Proofing the yeast in warm water with sugar shows whether it’s active—if it doesn’t foam within 5–10 minutes, start again with fresh yeast and proper water temperature.
Measure your flour correctly
Accurate flour measurement matters for a soft texture. Too much flour makes the dough dense. To measure, fluff the flour, spoon it into your measuring cup, then level it off with a knife.

Rolling out the breadsticks
Yeast dough doubles in size, so roll each piece thinner than the final desired width. I shape the dough into a long log, cut it into 16–18 one-inch pieces, then roll each piece between my palms into a thin log about 7 inches long. If you prefer shorter sticks, cut them in half after shaping.
Prevent drying while baking
Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray before baking to help maintain moisture in the oven. This keeps the tops soft instead of forming a dry crust.

For the topping, mix melted butter with garlic powder, salt to taste, and Italian seasoning. Brush the mixture over the breadsticks right after they come out of the oven so the butter soaks in and the herbs release their aroma.

These breadsticks are soft, buttery and addictive. Serve them warm with your favorite main—pasta, casseroles, or soup. They’re sure to become a go-to side for family dinners.

These Homemade Garlic Butter Breadsticks are soft, fluffy and full of buttery garlic flavor—simple to make and perfect with many dishes.
Ingredients
Dough:
- 1 and ½ cups warm water (110-115˚F)
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
- 1 and ½ teaspoon salt
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
For Brushing:
- 5 tablespoon melted butter
- ½–1 teaspoon salt, to taste
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Instructions
For the Dough:
- Pour warm water into a stand mixer bowl fitted with a dough hook. Sprinkle the yeast and sugar into the water and let sit 5–10 minutes until frothy. If it doesn’t foam, your yeast may be inactive or the water too hot.
- Add melted butter, salt and half the flour. Mix on low and gradually add the remaining flour. Increase speed to medium-low and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, about 7–10 minutes. Alternatively, knead by hand on a lightly floured surface.
- Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough inside and turn to coat. Cover loosely with plastic wrap or a towel and let rise in a warm spot for 1–1½ hours, until doubled.
Shaping the Dough:
- Punch down the risen dough and form it into a long log. Divide into 16–18 equal pieces and roll each between your palms into a thin 7-inch log. For shorter breadsticks, cut each log in half.
- Place the logs on a parchment-lined baking sheet about 1 inch apart. Cover with a towel to keep them from drying while you finish shaping.
- Let the shaped breadsticks rest, covered, for another hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray to prevent drying and bake 14–15 minutes or until golden brown.
- While baking, combine the melted butter, garlic powder, salt and Italian seasoning.
- Brush the hot breadsticks immediately with the garlic butter mixture and serve warm.
Notes
– For a warm rising spot, preheat the oven to 200°F, then turn it off and place the covered dough inside with the oven light on.
– Breadsticks are best the first day but can be stored in an airtight container for 1–2 days. Reheat briefly in the microwave for softness or in the oven for a crisp exterior.
– Butter can be substituted with margarine if desired.
