Here in Arkansas the weather loves to surprise you — cool for a day or two, then warm again. As the old saying goes, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes.” Whether or not Mark Twain had Arkansas specifically in mind, that sentiment rings true for anyone in the South. With fall officially here, I’m testing and sharing all kinds of seasonal treats. One of my favorites this year is these adorable peanut butter pumpkins.

I began blogging to share DIY projects and recipes with friends and family. Over time I’ve learned to find inspiration everywhere: flea markets, yard sales, stores, and grocery aisles. When you slow down and look around, everyday items often spark ideas and end up in your cart before you know it.

Skippy Peanut Butter Bites

While shopping one day I spotted Skippy Peanut Butter Bites and thought their round shape would make perfect little pumpkins — and who doesn’t love peanut butter? With Halloween and Thanksgiving coming up, they were an obvious fit. The method is delightfully simple: melt, dip, and add a sprinkle.

Candy melts come in lots of colors and are available at supermarkets, craft stores, and party shops. You can blend different colors to achieve custom shades. One tip: don’t try to use regular food coloring to tint candy melts or almond bark — it tends to thicken them and doesn’t work well for dipping. Adding shortening to thin them hasn’t worked well for me either. If you have a reliable method for coloring almond bark, I’d love to hear it.

If you prefer, you can use your favorite peanut butter ball recipe and shape them into pumpkins before coating. I always aim to keep things easy, and this recipe fits the bill. I hope you try these little pumpkins — they’re great for school treats, fall parties, or a quick homemade gift.

Melt the candy melts according to package instructions. Insert a toothpick into a peanut butter bite and dip it into the melted candy, rotating to fully coat.
