Ed is best known as a comedian and actor, and he also presents the popular Off Menu podcast. He serves as a judge on Great British Menu and has recently added author to his list of credits with the publication of his debut book, Glutton. Across stand-up, radio and television, Ed has built a wide-ranging career that blends sharp observational humour with candid personal reflection.
His comedy journey began at Durham University, where he performed with the Durham Revue. He first took his solo show to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2011, a move that helped establish him on the stand-up circuit. Over the years his material has remained rooted in observation, often turned inward, with frequent references to his own life. One recurring theme is his experience living with diabetes, a diagnosis he received as a teenager. Rather than hiding it, he weaves his health journey into his routines, using self-deprecating and honest storytelling to connect with audiences.
Ed attributes his comic voice to a long-standing love of sitcoms and stand-up comedy, a combination that sharpened his instincts for timing and character. He has been a regular panellist on BBC’s Mock the Week and has appeared in a range of television and radio programmes. The Off Menu podcast, which he co-hosts with James Acaster, has been particularly successful and played a major role in bringing him to a broader audience.
When asked what drew him to comedy, Ed gives a characteristically candid answer: he describes himself as having the “perfect mix of a terrifying ego and an astonishing lack of self-esteem.” That contrast — alternating between confidence and self-doubt — is something he says has been instrumental to his work as a comedian. It lets him push boundaries while remaining relatable, and it fuels the self-aware humour that features in his performances.
