Use Ripe Kiwis for Best Flavor

For the best results, use ripe kiwis. The riper the fruit, the sweeter and more aromatic the flavor. We usually wait until the kiwis are soft to the touch before using them — that extra ripeness makes a noticeable difference in sweetness and body. Serve these at your next get-together and they’ll be a hit.

Tips and Variations

  • Can you double this recipe? Yes — the recipe scales up easily. We often make double batches for parties.
  • Orange liqueur or orange bitters? Both work. Some tasters preferred orange liqueur (classic flavor), while others liked a substitute of 1/3 cup simple syrup plus several dashes of orange bitters. Either approach is included in the notes below.
  • Let kiwis ripen on the counter until soft. Firm kiwis are tarter because their sugar hasn’t fully developed.
  • If you prefer a brighter, tangier margarita, increase the fresh lime juice slightly.
  • Want heat? Add a few jalapeño slices while blending for a spicy jalapeño kiwi margarita.
